Italy turned over command of the naval contingent of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to Germany on Sunday. Italian Admiral Giuseppe De Giorgi passed command of the beefed-up force to German Admiral Andreas Krause during a ceremony aboard Italy's flagship Guiseppe Garibaldi aircraft carrier at the Port of Beirut.

The naval patrols were instituted under the terms of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the war with Israel on August 14.

The ceremony was also attended by UNIFIL's commander, Major General Alain Pellegrini, who hailed the Italian-led mission - which helped end an economically crippling two-month Israeli blockade on Lebanon - as "a real success."
