| BEIRUT—Thirteen French tanks, the most powerful armour ever deployed by a United Nations peacekeeping force, rolled ashore yesterday, beefing up a mission aimed at helping cement an uneasy ceasefire in Lebanon. But some European officials are concerned international peacekeepers will be at best ineffective and at worst humiliated if hostilities flare between Hezbollah fighters and Israeli troops. Scores of blue-helmeted French troops transferred the Leclerc tanks, AUF-1 artillery cannons, two high-tech Cobra radar trucks and dozens of armoured vehicles and transport trucks from a cargo ship in Beirut's port. Illustration photo | Following the lifting of Israel's blockade against Lebanon, United Nations naval vessels began patrolling alongside their Lebanese counterparts today to secure the country's maritime border ahead of the deployment of a full task force in the coming weeks, the UN force announced.
A Naval Operations Centre has been set up at the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) headquarters in Naqoura in the south of the country to coordinate all operational details and Italian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Giuseppe De Giorgi is leading the interim maritime force.

 | The Hizbullah terrorist organization declared Sunday that it rejects deploying United Nations Interim Forces (UNIFIL) north of the Litani River, according to Voice of Lebanon radio.
Hizbullah spokesmen were reacting to reports that UNIFIL soldiers were taking positions at the Beirut International Airport, one of the major positions where Israel fears weapons from Iran and Syria will arrive on their way to Hizbullah terrorists.

 | Following an initial deployment of engineers, more French troops arrived in Lebanon Friday as part of the pledged 2,000-strong contingent which would form part of a UN force to maintain the current ceasefire.
Another 170 French troops arrived at the south Lebanese coastal town of Naqura on Friday to reinforce UN peacekeepers along the border with Israel, a day after France announced that it was committing 1,600 more troops to a UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon.
