Italy turned over command of the naval contingent of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to Germany on Sunday. Italian Admiral Giuseppe De Giorgi passed command of the beefed-up force to German Admiral Andreas Krause during a ceremony aboard Italy's flagship Guiseppe Garibaldi aircraft carrier at the Port of Beirut.

The naval patrols were instituted under the terms of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the war with Israel on August 14.

The ceremony was also attended by UNIFIL's commander, Major General Alain Pellegrini, who hailed the Italian-led mission - which helped end an economically crippling two-month Israeli blockade on Lebanon - as "a real success."

The National Assembly of Bulgaria on Friday, approved a decision to send a warship with a crew of around 160 to Lebanon to help patrol its coast, said reports by the BTA.

The decision, adopted by the government one week ago, was passed by a 117-7 vote, with one obstention, in the parliament.

The Druzki frigate is to be deployed in Lebanon from Oct. 15 to Dec. 15, to help the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) patrol its coast and prevent weapon smuggling.

The warship, compatible with NATO standards, was purchased from Belgium in Oct. 2005, as part of preliminary steps to modernize the Bulgarian army.

U.N. peacekeepers in south Lebanon protested with Israel against air violations as 12 Israeli warplanes entered Lebanese airspace.

UNIFIL spokesman Alexander Ivanco said Friday the force's command recorded over the past week several violations by the Israeli air force and protested to the Israeli army, asking it to stop the breaches.

He said UNIFIL's command informs the U.N. headquarters of all violations on the Blue Line that separates Lebanon and Israel, which are later referred to the Security Council on a daily basis.

A Lebanese army statement said 12 Israeli planes entered Lebanese air space Friday flying over several regions in south, north and east Lebanon.

Lebanese Army commander Gen. Michel Sleiman expressed hope earlier Friday that his troops will be able to assume security in south Lebanon without international help soon.

The conflict between Israel and Hizbollah has garnered enough respect for the latter that some believe the relationship between militant group and UNIFIL should be closely watched.

As a fragile cease-fire holds in Lebanon, the predominant issues confounding peace are Hizbollah’s increased prestige and its relationship with the newly reconstituted UNIFIL. The current conflict has strengthened the militant group's role as a quasi-state actor, its integration into Lebanese society, and its increasing popularity in the greater Middle East. These successes raise greater concerns regarding regional and potentially international security.
