An international drive for a ceasefire in Lebanon halted on Monday amid sharp differences at the United Nations Security Council, Israel's rejection of any truce in the near future and a Hezbollah warning that it would oppose the deployment of a multinational security force.

Amid undiminished outrage after the Qana tragedy and complaints that the UN was doing nothing, Condoleezza Rice, the US Secretary of State, said she was convinced a sustainable ceasefire could be achieved at the Security Council this week.

BEIRUT: Israeli forces battled Hizbollah fighters in southern Lebanon on Sunday after the Jewish state crossed the border with tanks and troops, opening a new front in its bid to stop the guerrilla group firing rockets.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported intense fighting in the morning in the village of Taibe, just south of the town of Marjayoun. The area had been under heavy Israeli shelling on Saturday, a UNIFIL spokesman said.

Hizbollah said its fighters had destroyed an Israeli tank in the afternoon as it tried to advance from Adayseh, a Lebanese village on the border. Israel confirmed an anti-tank missile hit one of its tanks and four soldiers were wounded lightly.

After each call, the Israeli officer promised to have the bombing stopped, an officer at the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) base in Noqoura said.

Lebanese wait to be evacuated by personnel from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon

As the conflict between Israel and Hizballah guerillas in South Lebanon has raged on for the last week, the calls have increased to put some kind of international peacekeeping force on the ground. But in fact, just such a force is already in place — and has been for nearly three decades — to help protect and provide for residents of this war-racked corner of the Middle East. However, the performance of UNIFIL (for United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon), has not inspired much confidence that a mediating force can do much to help.
